Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

The new 491 visas, Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) subclass 491 visa will enable eligible skilled workers and their families to live, work, and study in designated regional areas of Australia for five years. Visa holders will be eligible to apply for a Permanent Residence visa after three years.

The 491 is a five-year visa. This visa may allow you to apply for permanent residence through the Subclass 191 – Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional). To apply for the permanent visa, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You have lived, worked or studied in the designated regional area for at least three years, while holding a 491 visa, and
  • You can show earnings of at least $53,900 annually for three years. If you have a partner included in your 491 application, only one of you needs to show the three years of annual salary (through tax returns) at or above $53,900. Your partner can be the primary applicant for the 191 visas if they can demonstrate meeting this requirement.

It is mandatory to score at least 65 points to be invited to apply for a visa. The EOI will be viewed by the Australian immigration authorities, and if they like your profile, the candidate will be invited to apply for the 491 visas.

You will then have 60 days from the date of the invitation to make a valid visa application online before the invitation expires.
